Just a note on why I haven’t raved about Rome: I didn’t see much of it. And I didn’t get lost, or deliver my talk to the wrong conference, or save the Pope from an embarrassing situation involving jellied eels, or anything else noteworthy. I did a little sightseeing but at night, so the monumental [...]
Off tomorrow to the EvoLang conference, in Rome. Wheee! Back Sunday evening.
My new passport arrived today. I’ve been putting off blogging about this, because announcing to the world that a brand-new passport is arriving in the mail didn’t seem so very smart. Now that it’s here and I don’t have to keep quiet any more, I feel I must give some advice to anyone in my [...]
I just booked tickets for my trip home. Wheeee!
I’ll be travelling on December 30th and 31st, arriving in Auckland. The plan is to spend a week or ten days making my way down the North Island, calling on friends and relations along the way, and get home to Golden Bay in early January. Two or [...]
By foot, bus, tram, metro, airplane and train, I’ve wound my weary way back. The workshop was fantastic, the best of the three I’ve been to so far. Tomorrow morning at 9:30 my flight leaves for Prague. Wednesday I’m taking a bus to Harrachov, then struggling through the snow to an unmarked border crossing into Poland, where I will vanish into the untracked wilderness.
Hopefully I’ll emerge again, at the Szklarska Poreba workshop. Then it’s pragmasemantics and skiing for a long weekend, before wending [...]

I’m off to Berlin tomorrow, for Games and Decisions in Pragmatics II. I just went online to book a hostel (after procrastinating for the past week for various not-very-good reasons), only to discover that online booking needs several days notice. And no phone-numbers in evidence. So we’ll see how things pan out when I arrive [...]
I’ve been working through the seven CDs worth of photos that came back from my recent Italy excursion with my mother and sister, trying to piece them together into a coherent story. It’s not easy. The things you remember didn’t get photographed, some of the snapshots seem actually to contradict the impressions I picked up. [...]
So it seems I barely got back, and I’m leaving again. This time a quick week in Venice and the surrounding area, again a family effort. The thesis is coming along, it will benefit from a change of scene.
Back on June 5th, by which time I will be a year older and hopefully sunburnt.
