Online!

I’m writing this from home. That’s all.

Will proof for books

I’m launching a new unbusiness venture. Every now and then I get asked to proofread something written in English, usually by a second-language English speaker. I’m one of those odd sorts who actually enjoys that sort of thing, but not enough to do it for free. I’ve always felt odd asking for money though, and [...]

Milestones

I turned 25 a couple of days ago (quarter century! woo!). This would hardly merit blogging, except that there’s a nice numerological coincidence with my father’s birthday, which is today. (And his father’s is the same day as mine… it’s almost like they planned it.) He’s turning 50, which makes this cool for a couple [...]

If it’s Wednesday, this must be Rome

Off tomorrow to the EvoLang conference, in Rome. Wheee! Back Sunday evening.

“Samson” Czech beer

Just in time for my trip to Prague (on the way to the Szklarska Poreba workshop next week), Marieke brought be a bottle of this beer. (For my extensive lurking readership, “Tikitu” is officially my middle name, I’ve been Samson for most of my life. If I smoked, it would be my tobacco of choice [...]

Housewarming

I’ve been typically lax about putting the word around, so if anyone hasn’t heard yet about my housewarming: consider yourselves invited. It’s this coming Saturday, starting early because Bos en Lommer is far from the centre and the trams/metro stop running at midnight. Contact me for directions, it’s close to the metro station De Vlugtlaan. [...]

Just call me Master Tikitu

The defence is over, I passed, I’m officially Tikitu de Jager, MSc. The Dutch equivalent, which I am also entitled to, is ‘Doctorandus’: Drs. Tikitu de Jager. (The possibilities for confusion with this one in New Zealand are evilly tempting…) Better still, I graduated ‘cum laude,’ which I find slightly surprising and wholly delightful. Geek [...]

Miracle! (well, a minor one)

Clive Thompson’s blog collision detection put me onto the extremely addictive little flash game Chaos Theory. It’s pretty cool, but not in itself worth re-blogging. But Clive (whose blog is a great collection of weird research, as well as simple-but-addictive time-wasters) also mentioned that the highest score he had achieved was 121. (The game gives [...]

Almost famous

I get back from Italy to find that in my absence I’ve been appreciated :-) This site is apparently coolstop‘s “best of the cool daily pick,” 25/5/05. It was almost a birthday present :-) I’ve just started exploring the coolstop site, and it looks like I might be there for a long time yet… They [...]

Another trip… Italy this time

So it seems I barely got back, and I’m leaving again. This time a quick week in Venice and the surrounding area, again a family effort. The thesis is coming along, it will benefit from a change of scene. Back on June 5th, by which time I will be a year older and hopefully sunburnt.
