Heads up: The Black Seeds are hitting Amsterdam again!

They’re promoting the European release of the album Into the Dojo, out in this country today. (No, I wasn’t queueing for it. I bought it on their tour here last summer. So there.) In my opinion the album isn’t up to the standard of On the Sun, but their live show was still just as rocking as always a year ago and I guess that hasn’t changed.

They’ve got two gigs in the area, playing the Melkweg in Amsterdam on Friday August 3rd then Timboektoe in Wijk aan Zee on Saturday the 4th. They’re an 8-piece dub-reggae-funk group with fantastic energy live, that will get you dancing before you know what’s happening.

So who’s joining me at the Melkweg? (I’m leaving for Dublin the day after, so the Wijk aan Zee gig is out.)

God made mud.

God got lonesome. So God said to some of the mud, “Sit
up!”. “See all I’ve made,” said God, “the hills,
the sea, the sky, the stars.” And I was some of the mud that
got to sit up and look around.

Lucky me, lucky mud.

I, mud, sat up and saw what a nice job God had done.

Nice going, God!

Nobody but You could have done it, God! I certainly couldn’t
have. I feel very unimportant compared to You. The only
way I can feel the least bit important is to think of all the
mud that didn’t even get to sit up and look around. I got so
much, and most mud got so little.

Thank you for the honour!

Now mud lies down again and goes to sleep. What memories
for mud to have! What interesting other kinds of sitting-up
 mud I met!

I loved everything I saw!

Good night.

I will go to heaven now. I can hardly wait… To find out for
 certain what my

the good things our karass did for you.

Amen.

If you haven’t read any Vonnegut, now would be a good time. If you have, go back and re-read an old favourite.

Robodock looks just fantastically fun, and is happening just down the road from the houseboat. I’ve been advised to catch Babylon Circus, ska at 1am Saturday night, but I must admit I’m most excited by the robots and fire everywhere. Robots and fire! Whee! (Thanks Erik for the tip.)

With less robots but guaranteed plenty of fireworks, this Sunday afternoon Impromptu will perform in Utrecht. These guys do improv theatre based around improvised music, or possibly vice versa (“4 actor/musicians. 34 musical instruments. No script…”). The line-up has changed since their last gig, and this time they’re performing for the first time in Dutch. I honestly don’t know what to expect (I’ve been a fanboy for quite some time, but I’m sure they’ll surprise me) but I suppose that’s what “Impromptu” means.

(Oh, here’s some advance warning: Pere Ubu are coming to Utrecht October 22, but won’t make it to A’dam. The time until then can be profitably employed getting used to their … unique style.)

The Black Seeds played last night at Blijburg, and it went off (as expected). The festival atmosphere was awesome, laid-back and hippie, and by the second song they had I reckon everyone on the entire terrain crammed up in front of the stage rocking out. It was lovely to see the feedback loop, as the initially hesitant crowd (there weren’t many people on-site, sadly) got closer and closer to the stage and the musicians got more and more enthusiastic. (After hearing the two tracks from the new album offered on their site, I was afraid that they had softened their sound somewhat. Be relieved: they rock just as hard as always. Now I’m curious what the rest of the album is like.)

To those who missed it: there is still hope! Wednesday they’re playing Utrecht (in between they’re popping back to London for another gig — glad I’m not a professional musician!), at
dB’s studio. I recommend it highly — so highly I’m going along myself to hear them again (yeah, call me a fanboy…). And to buy the new cd, which they had couriered to the Netherlands (import restrictions or something, since they’re not signed with a European label) and which didn’t turn up on time. A little bird told me the gig price is likely to be €5, although that’s not confirmed yet.

Go. See. Enjoy. (Oh, and I’ve got a kortingskaart if anyone is going by train.)

So I caught Fat Freddy’s Drop on Saturday, through a nice wee chain of coincidences. Thursday night we celebrated ending the Dutch course, and an American girl from the course (thanks Heather!) told me sometime in the evening that “Some band from New Zealand, Fat Freakies or something, are coming here in June or maybe in July.” Of course I jumped down turned around picked a bag of whoopee (to coin a phrase) because I managed to miss them when they played Amsterdam in August last year. And that evening I also happened to run into Nic, another Kiwi I know here, and she hadn’t heard about the gig either, so I promised I’d send on the news. Friday I went online to check out the whens and wheres, and (jump down, turn around, another bag of whoopee), just in time for the gig the very next day. The coincidences kept piling up, Nic also knew one of the folk I dragged along (friend of a flatmate?) and the dude that I saw lurking around the stage entrance (“That’s Warren Maxwell, from TrinityRoots back when they still were, fabulous kiwi group, tragic they split up…”) turns out to play sax for Fat Freddy’s. (Yeah, I should have known this. So sue me.)

The gig went off, although the Sugar Factory was far too hot and a bit too loud. I walked off with
a CD, in case anyone wants to check out the sound, although it doesn’t quite live up to their energy onstage.

And (jump down… you know the drill) the Black Seeds are going to be here in September. No news exactly when yet, but they’re touring again (Kiwis: catch the down home tour in August) and you can be very sure you’ll hear about it when I know what the plans are.

Oh yeah, and it’s really summer at last. Jump down, turn around…

In short, I’ll be out of the office, offline, and unfindable until Thursday next week. Expect stories on my return (I’m taking a compass, sorry to disappoint).
