Narbonic #6!

The sixth and final volume of Narbonic has finally gone to print. I couldn’t wait and read the end of the story in the archives, but it’ll be great to get it on paper.

Now we start agitating for the Astonishing Excursions (aka Victorian Narbonic to the Moon! And Venus!). (Apparently the format will make this [...]

Exorcising Laplace’s Demon

A magnificent new Dresden Codak exposes the diabolical true meaning of the “Laplace Transformation.”

If you enjoyed that, check out Dungeons and Discourse (featuring Tiny Carl Jung) and Advanced Dungeons and Discourse (”Guys, shut up I found it! The map to Occam’s Razor!”). And really the whole of DC, although you’ll be hopelessly confused by the [...]

Good news / bad news (Waterstones comic sale)

Good news: Waterstones (Amsterdam branch) has a pretty fair selection of “graphic novels” (read: comics).

Bad news: Waterstones (Amsterdam branch) is fairly pricey.

Good news: Said “graphic novels” are on a 3-for-2 sale.

Bad news: In fact only about half of said “graphic novels” are on a 3-for-2 sale.

Good news: One that I want is covered. (Alison Bechdel, [...]

Bibliophibians

That’s a spoiler for the punchline of this comic strip.

Beth should ditch the jerk, says I.

An unexpected acquisition

I went into Scheltema this morning. I wasn’t even looking for a book… but I got sidetracked (it’s a five-storey bookstore, in retrospect it was inevitable). I got caught by this.

That’s Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip. (It’s actually “Volume 1″ of “The Complete…”, projected to run to five volumes, which to my mind [...]

How can I not have heard of this?

They’re filming Watchmen.

They’re filming Watchmen.

Whether it’s a train wreck or a triumph, I am seeing that film.

Summertime…

… and the living is easy.

The book I’m reading is the first Narbonic collection, a previously-web comic about evil mad scientists; there are four more and a sixth on the horizon. The story’s over (and rerunning as “The Director’s Cut”, with commentary), the archives are open, you know what to do.

Sincere thanks to Freek for [...]

Review: Shaun Tan’s The Arrival

Over at my LibraryThing reviews account I just posted my review of Shaun Tan’s beautiful story-in-pictures The Arrival. I can’t recommend it highly enough. You can see some images on the artist’s website (I’ve linked a few from the review also).

After posting the review I started wandering through other people’s reviews (the perils and joys [...]

Holy crap how cool

The comic. The result (with photos).

Awesome.

Kiwis in comics

It’s that time of year again! Latest discovery: How to prepare a Kiwi. (Via xkcd, which comes recommended. Buggered if I know where it comes from originally — if you know, give me a shout.)

On the subject, there’s a fantastic animation on YouTube: Kiwi!.
