Shaun Tan short film!

Shaun Tan has made a short film of his picture book The Lost Thing. There’s a trailer on youtube: it seems like the art direction has perfectly captured the style of the book¹ but the animation looks a bit clunky. Despite which, I am running to see this … when I find out how/when I can.

Notes:

Not Shaun Tan’s style: that he seems to reinvent with each new project. Seriously, check out his site. This is a visually versatile dude. Personal favourites: The Arrival and The Rabbits.

Ok, short notice: tomorrow night at Pakhuis Wilhelmina there’s a fantastic lineup: Amsterdam’s Caspian Hat Dance at 9 then Kočani Orkestar at 10 (and Serbian dj Cigan at 11:30, apparently). That’s gonna be a party.

It’s part of a three-day festival (there are films showing at Kriterion and De Brakke Grond too, and more more music, readings, and … a Balkan BBQ?).

Annual clearing sale at Nijhof & Lee

I probably shouldn’t talk about this, to keep the competition down, but… The fabulous typography/design/art bookstore Nijhof & Lee is having their annual clearance sale. Except that last year they didn’t have one, so this is a biannual (even more stuff worth drooling over, no doubt). February 6 and 7, from 10am. I’ve never been to their sales, so I don’t know how busy it will be, but given their reputation I expect wedging myself inside is going to take some kind of specialised tool.

BLDGBLOG Book!

The BLDGBLOG Book has become a reality! Can’t wait for this one, and Amazon is selling it for only $20 (even the list price of $30 is less than I expected — it’s pretty illustration-heavy). You can see some spreads on Flickr (adorably photographed on what I presume is the author’s floor, with what I presume is the author’s hand holding the pages open).

His birthday; our present

Next week it’s Brendan Adkins’ birthday, and he’s giving us a present. Ommatidia, the first Anacrusis book, already exists. Wow. And in a week or so we’ll be able to order it. That gives you about a week to trawl through the archives and discover that that’s exactly what you’re going to do.

The super-cool architecture blog BLDGBLOG will be publishing a book! (The bad news is, not until spring 2009.) Congratulations to Geoff, and everyone else should use the time to wander over and check out his archives — by the time the book appears, you’ll know you need it.
