Ah yes. Suppose I want a pdf that I can read on my iLiad. I need a Windows or Mac machine with Adobe Digital Editions installed on it, so that I can download the DRM-locked file. Then I can transfer that file to my linux machine, where I can run the unlocking scripts. That will give me a pdf (if that's what's locked up inside the Digital Editions crippleware) which I can transfer to the iLiad and read.

Too. Much. Effort.

Yeah, I saw that go by. That might be one of the formats those books turn up in; I lost interest when I realised that I would have to download Adobe's deliberately-crippled reader, which is guaranteed not to work on the iLiad. So it seems if I was less lazy I might be able to buy the books and format-shift them to pdf for myself. Big if...

I'm thinking through a few posts that look at these issues more rationally. Having written it down, I'm completely unconvinced by the ebook-to-music DRM analogy. I'm worried that working that out will convince me that DRM is a workable model for ebook publication... which I would really rather not believe, obviously.
