&lt;p&gt;ILLC folks should note that there's an &lt;a href="http://www.illc.uva.nl/SupportandInfo/illcdiss.html rel="nofollow"&gt;ILLC dissertation style&lt;/a&gt;, which comes with quite a different template.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;(I disagree with some of the design decisions they've made, but the kind of structural organisation I've suggested here should be compatible with pretty much whatever classfile you want to use. It's mainly about being able to reuse the same source for in-thesis chapters and for stand-alone chapter articles, to send around to interested folks.)&lt;/p&gt;
