Golden Bay: down on the farm

Another photo album.

In Golden Bay I stayed with my folks, on their farm. Despite this, there are no photos of sheep. We did lots of other traditional Golden Bay things though. For instance…

  • Beaches
    • Tata (and a shag)
    • Wharariki (walking on trees, and a seal)
    • Bainham
    • on the Abel Tasman (more shags)
  • Haymaking (you can see how two blokes marry in the Bay, if you’re interested)
  • Swimming in
    • the (upper) Takaka
    • the Abel Tasman
    • the swimming hole up the road

My knowledge of English comes mainly from films, and I learned the word `shag’ from Austin Powers. I made some Freudian interpretation error, it appears. So, what he actually was inquiring about was whether the pretty girls would like to share waterfowl with him?

“So you’ve got a wee new brother, Jimmy? The stork came and visited, did it?”

    “The what?”

“The stork — in the chimney, bringing the new baby, you know…”

“I don’t know about no stork in the chimney. Me dad said it was a shag at the beach.”

(With apologies to Brian, who can tell that joke properly.)
