These cheerful little fellows were hanging out in the tree in front of our place a couple of weeks ago. (Cheers to Andi for the photos, and apologies for butchering them with the Gimp.)

Ring-necked parakeets — elegant and loud. There was a big population of these in west London when I lived there, and I’ve seen them on the English south coast too. Descendants of cage escapees, I assume, like the rosellas in Dunedin… they’ll be sorry when the Gulf Stream shuts off.
Oh, it’s cheerful you are. The only sad thing about these beauties is that they usually roost somewhere near the Vondelpark, and there’s only three or four that hang out at my end of town. I’ve once seen a flock gathering in the evening over the houseboat, but then they took off southward again. The noise was incredible while it lasted though. (Btw, I’m tweaking my SK settings to try and let your comments through automatically — why oh why doesn’t it include a whitelist?!)
