Mutt config: double-double-quote

A little oddity of Mutt I just discovered, which I haven’t seen documented anywhere. When setting a string variable containing spaces

set index_format=”‘%4C %Z %{%b %d} %-15.15L (%?l?%4l&%4c?) %s’”

you seem to need two layers of nested quotes. (Ahem. And it needs to be all on one line. But you knew that.) At least as far as [...]

Observed while biking

A double-bass player (Sven, the dude from cafe Alto Tuesdays) cycling somewhere with his bass on his handlebars.

Those with delicate stomachs might want to leave it at that. For the rest, I also saw…

Confidences

Last Friday night we had a strange and lovely encounter with a random Dutch guy at two o’clock in the morning.

Belén and Marijn and myself, we were sitting outside a pub in De Pijp, we’d had enough of the music and the crush so we just sat in the dark talking until after closing time. [...]

Last.fm/eMusic tie-in that works

Robin pointed me to coffee.geek.nz, where they have an eMusic lookup based on Last.fm (Audioscrobbler) history: Audioscrobbler to Emusic for lazy people. I’m already discovering interesting new stuff…

(Robin is also responsible for eMusic/J, the unofficial —and very nice— linux eMu download app.)

Fat Freddy’s Drop (been and gone)

So I caught Fat Freddy’s Drop on Saturday, through a nice wee chain of coincidences. Thursday night we celebrated ending the Dutch course, and an American girl from the course (thanks Heather!) told me sometime in the evening that “Some band from New Zealand, Fat Freakies or something, are coming here in June or maybe [...]

Will proof for books

I’m launching a new unbusiness venture.

Every now and then I get asked to proofread something written in English, usually by a second-language English speaker. I’m one of those odd sorts who actually enjoys that sort of thing, but not enough to do it for free. I’ve always felt odd asking for money though, and even more so nowadays with [...]

Cold showers

(Blogging has been light lately, and will continue so for some time — busy busy busy.)

Monday I blew a lightbulb in my apartment. Didn’t have any spares, so I didn’t discover until Tuesday morning that this in turn blew a circuit breaker. The circuit breaker powering the hot water system. In my morning pre-coffee daze [...]

Milestones

I turned 25 a couple of days ago (quarter century! woo!). This would hardly merit blogging, except that there’s a nice numerological coincidence with my father’s birthday, which is today. (And his father’s is the same day as mine… it’s almost like they planned it.) He’s turning 50, which makes this cool for a couple [...]
