Yup, I think the Russian-ness is part of the appeal; it's a totally different tone to anything American I've seen. About the absolutist/nihilist: we're supposed to take the vampire-chick seriously, right? She really doesn't see the Light dudes as better. So the question is, is she bad because she's following a Bad Dude, or because being a vampire is inherently bad? Or is she redeemable? That's why I'm so interested in the sequel (a friend is downloading it...)

I happened upon this movie accidentally last year and two words drew me in, Russian and Vampires! Everything about the film was undeniably Russian. From the mood to lighting and vehicle, good lord I loved the grit! I don’t really believe the film examines anything much deeper than the absolutist/nihilist dichotomy. What most impressed me were the many innovations introduced to the vampire genre. The alternate reality into which they could sink was brilliant, and how could you not be impressed by the attempt to bureaucratize vampiric behavior (an innovation that could only have come out of Russia). Gritty, beautiful, highly recommended!
