So it seems I barely got back, and I’m leaving again. This time a quick week in Venice and the surrounding area, again a family effort. The thesis is coming along, it will benefit from a change of scene.
Back on June 5th, by which time I will be a year older and hopefully sunburnt.
Sheesh, this is terrifying. From the British Telegraph:
Ministers are particularly concerned about exam results this year, having failed to achieve their 2004 target of 75 per cent of 14-year-olds reaching the level expected in English. Just 71 per cent reached the standard, despite a multi-million pound Government strategy aimed at improving lessons in secondary schools.

The Catalonian band Cheb Balowski are performing this Friday at the Melkweg. I saw these guys last night in Utrecht, this is a must-see gig.
This essay comes from my experiences proofreading LaTeX documents,
both semi-professionally and for friends. It is intended mainly for
technical writing, where LaTeX really comes into its own and where
attention to detail can both greatly assist the proofreader or
typesetter, and greatly improve the readability of the
manuscript. This is neither a description of how to use LaTeX nor [...]
A month out of date, but very funny: this translation of an article in German describes a self-proclaimed “hacker” who apparently attacked his own machine via the loopback IP, 127.0.0.1 (it happened on IRC, you get the transcript plus commentary).
It’s hard to believe anyone could be this stupid, it looks an awful lot like a [...]
I went yesterday to the “Victorian Circus” exhibition at the Brakke Grond. Artistically disappointing, technologically highly interesting. Worth a visit, if you can get there before it closes midnight Saturday (it’s free, which helps). The Brakke Grond is also recommended — selection of fine Belgian beers, good atmosphere, biljarts table, and an art gallery thrown [...]
Last night as I was going home the buskers at Centraal Station were playing “La Cucaracha” (somewhat badly). This morning they were still playing “La Cucaracha” (equally badly). I wonder if they eat and sleep in shifts?
Here is a short story, “anthropology,” in sound and simple pictures. Very short, worth turning your speakers on for. (Created by friendchip.)
If that isn’t a contradiction in terms… They aren’t very pretty, but it’s an interesting idea. Randomised fractal-like generation of a design (think Koch snowflake, Sierpinski gasket) then run it through a 3D printer. It’s breed, brought to you by notnot.
Lots of other cool stuff on their site, including a robot masseus and a highly [...]
Wheeoo, I thought I was past being surprised at Dutch bicycles, but I’ve had to think again! Walking through Amsterdam is sort of technology fair for things bike-related, and you get used to seeing a family of four all hanging off the same two or three wheels, or somebody moving house with all his worldly [...]
