A nasty wee story by Neil Gaiman

Online version of Snow, Glass, Apples by Neil Gaiman. This is a wonderfully dark and twisted retelling of a classic story. It seems to be available all over the place — I first read it in a collection but it’s apparently here by permission.

a (different) kiwi in a comic

White Ninja has a strip featuring a kiwi.

KesselsKramer

I really don’t know what these guys do. But every time you reload their site, you get a new (ugly) website advertising some non-existent service. Weird, but funny.

Up and running

Well, here it is. Thanks to Theron Parlin I’m not ashamed to look at this blog any more. So everyone else can too!

Soon (?) to come:

some new reviews a review category with extra info (recommended, where you’ll find it, etc) some cleverer content management (transient posts shorter, reviews longer, etc)

Auto-generated paper accepted for conference

This CNN report describes a recent variant of the Sokal Social Text hoax. This time, the accepted paper was auto-generated by a pseudo-scientific gibberish engine.

UC Berkely have a working prototype exoskeleton. Don’t go ape yet, it’s strictly human-scale, legs only, and used for carrying a heavy backpack. But it’s working, which is more than can be said for the competition… so far…

These guys have a bunch of other cool stuff, including a wheelbarrow with legs, a robotic pogo stick [...]

Orson Scott Card on fanfic

Orson Scott Card has some strong words on the subject of fan fiction. I respect this guy a lot, and he’s got a point.

Clocky — an agrophobic alarm clock

Clocky is an alarm clock that hides from you while you’re sleeping, so you can’t just turn hit snooze when it goes off … you have to look for it first!

Labyrinths

Short stories by a true master of the form. When Borges became blind, he was forced to compose his works in his head, turning them over and over until his constant attention wore them smooth like river stones. The result is an artificial but wholly beautiful style, in which no word is missing that should [...]
